Far Eastern University (FEU) will be gunning for the twice-to-beat incentive when it battles University of Santo Tomas (UST) today in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 78 men’s basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Tamaraws and the Growling Tigers will collide at 4 p.m. after the curtain-raiser match between University of the East (UE) and Adamson University at 2 p.m.
FEU holds the solo lead with 10-1 card and just a win away of clinching the first of the two twice-to-beat cards in the Final Four.
UST, on the other hand, is in se¬cond with 9-3 followed by Ateneo (8-4), De La Salle University (5-6), defending champion National University (5-7), UE (4-7), University of the Philippines (3-8) and Adamson (2-10).
The Tamaraws are looking to avenge their 71-72 loss to the Growling Tigers in the first round of elimination but head coach Nash Racela reminded his ward not to be complacent.
“They beat us in the first round and our goal right now is to win against them and split the series. We just need to play consistently,” said Racela.
FEU aims to extend its nine-game winning streak with veteran Mark Belo leading the charge along with Mike Tolomia and Roger Pogoy.
Belo is averaging 13.4 points and 1.18 block per game but Russel Escoto and Raymar Jose are also expected to provide the needed back up.
The Growling Tigers, however, are coming off a painful 71-91 loss against UE.
“Kailangan naming bumawi. Maganda talaga ang inilaro ng UE, maayos naman kami sa practice pero talagang prepared lang sila [UE] nung time na yun. We couldn’t execute [our game plan],” said UST mentor Bong Dela Cruz, who will be relying on Ed Daquioag, Kevin Ferrer and Karim Abdul.
