The new coach of the College of Saint Benilde (CSB) Blazers Tyrone Tang said that he is not rushing to bring his wards to the Final Four of the upcoming National Collegiate Athletic Association Season 93 men’s basketball tournament.
“For me, that’s my high goal (reaching the Final Four), something that I really want to be in and contend right away,” Tang, who played in the Philippine Basketball Association from 2008 to 2015 as a member of Rain or Shine, told reporters in a news conference.
“This is not the team that we built but this is the team that we’ll work with right now because there is no recruitment yet and there is no people coming in at least from our eyes.”
The 32-year-old La Salle graduate also thanked his former coach Franz Pumaren and former Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao, now coach of Northern Luzon Expressway in the PBA, for their positive influences.
“Coach Franz is a disciplinarian and good coach while Coach Yeng is tough and brave. They are both great coaches and models to me,” said Tang.
“I want the other teams to know that they are not safe winning when they face us. That’s the mindset of this team for this year.”
Tang signed a four-year contract with Saint Benilde renewable every year.
The Blazers, under their former coach Gabby Velasco did not reach the Final Four in the last four years. The Blazers suffered 17 losses in 18 games last season.
