NAGA City: Local bet Kurt Anthony Chavez, Maurice Sacho Ilustre of Muntinlupa City and Quezon City’s Chloe Kirsten Daos each won two gold medals on Wednesday in the swimming competition of the 2014 Batang Pinoy-Luzon Leg at the Metro Naga City Sports Complex in Barangay Pakul here.
The 12-year-old Chavez, the torchbearer in the opening ceremonies, topped the boys’ 1500-meter freestyle with a time record of 8:53.04. He later dominated the 800-m boys’ 12-year old and under freestyle category with 448.72.
“My father is a swimming instructor and he trained me since I was a small child,” said Chavez, a Grade 7 student at the Naga Science High School.
Chavez hopes to win at least five gold medals to boost his chance of inclusion in the national training pool.
Not to be outdone, Philippine training pool member Kirsten Daos of Quezon City dominated the girls’ 13-15-year old category 800-m freestyle with a time of 9:53:57. “My time now is improving since I joined the national training pool. I really hope I could join our national team in the forthcoming 2015 Southeast Asian Games in Singapore. That’s why I practice hard everyday,” said the 15-year-old Daos, whose best medal haul in the annual Batang Pinoy competition was seven golds during the 2012 national finals in Iloilo City. She is scheduled to attend a swimming camp in Qatar next month.
