ROSALES, Pangasinan: The Presidential Task Force on Media Killings led by Presidential Communications Undersecretary Joel Sy Egco on Wednesday visited newsman and radio commentator Virgilio Sarmiento Maganes who survived an ambush on Tuesday morning where he assured Maganes financial and legal assistance in his battle against his attackers.
Egco, the executive director of the task force, was accompanied by Senior Supt. Ronald Oliver-Lee, police provincial director, and Chief Supt. Gregorio Pimentel Jr. in visiting Maganes at the hospital here at about 6 p.m.
He said he was sent by Presidential Communications Secretary Martin Andanar to express their support to his fight against the assailants.
Egco asked Lee and Pimentel to provide Maganes security while the ambush is being investigated.
Maganes mentioned to Egco a policeman and a politician, whom he alleged were probably behind the attempt on his life.
Egco later told The Manila Times that the task force is willing to help Maganes in seeking justice and that he will discuss with Andanar giving reward to anybody who can give information that will lead to solution of the case and capture of the suspects.
He said President Rodrigo Duterte has expressed his support to the initiative of the task force in seeking immediate resolution of the Maganes case even as he ordered Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre to tap the National Bureau of Investigation in searching for the suspects.
Maganes was on board a tricycle on his way to Villasis town to wait for his ride to Dagupan City at about 5:30 a.m. on November 8 when two unidentified gunmen shot him several times, hitting him in the armpit.
