ZAMBOANGA CITY: A southern Philippine town mayor was wounded in an ambush Sunday by motorcycle gunmen ahead of general elections in May, police said. Police said Jasper Que, of Bongao town in Tawi-Tawi province, was shot several times while driving along San Jose Road in the coastal village of Baliwasan. He was rushed to hospital and is in stable condition. The assailants escaped after the ambush and police said it is investigating the attack. “There is an on-going investigation to determine the motive of the attack,” Chief Inspector Rogelio Alabata, a regional police spokesman, told The Manila Times. Que’s family has held Bongao town for many years now and the mayor is a political ally of President Benigno Aquino 3rd and member of his ruling Liberal Party. Tawi-Tawi is one of five provinces under the restive Muslim autonomous region.
