Owners of motor vehicles must be taxed more for every additional vehicle they purchase to lessen traffic congestion in the Philippines, a lawmaker said on Wednesday.
In her proposed House Bill 3928, Deputy Speaker Sharon Garin seeks to double the tax imposed at present under Executive Order 43 Series of 1986 or Restructuring the Private Motor Vehicle Tax.
“Persons engaged in the business of transportation or whose business requires more than one vehicle is not covered by the increased rates,” Garin said in a statement.
The Department of Transportation and the Department of Public Works and Highways shall be in charged of creating laws to prevent owners from registering their additional cars under the names of other persons, according to Garin.
Earlier, the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines Inc. said domestic vehicle sales in 2020 would account for between eight percent and 10 percent of the projected total sales of five to six million units within member economies of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
