At least 18 provinces in the Visayas and Mindanao are now under public storm warning signal no. 1 as tropical depression “Basyang” maintains its strength and continues to move towards the Leyte – Caraga area, the state weather bureau said on Friday.
In an interview, PAGASA weather forecaster Aldczar Aurelio said that as of 6 a.m. tropical depression Basyang was located at 581 km east northeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur (9.5 °N 131.5°E) packed with maximum sustained winds of 55 kph near the center. It is forecast to move west at 30 kph.
Aurelio said Basyang maintains its speed and movement expected to make landfall over Surigao Provinces late Friday evening or early Saturday morning.
He added that once it made landfall, there is a tendency Basyang might weaken into low pressure area (LPA).
He also said that tropical depression Basyang is expected to be out of the country by Monday headed towards Vietnam.
PAGASA said that public storm warning signal no. 1 (Winds of 30-60 kph is expected in at least 36 hours) – was hoisted over southern part of Samar, southern part of Eastern Samar, Leyte, Biliran, Southern Leyte, Camotes Island, Cebu, Negros Provinces, Siquijor Island, Bohol, Surigao del Norte, Siargao Island, Surigao del Sur, northern part of Agusan del Sur, Agusan del Norte, Camiguin Island, Dinagat Province and Misamis Oriental.
“Residents living in low lying and mountainous areas under public storm warning signal #1 are alerted against possible flashfloods and landslides,” the state weather bureau warned.
The estimated rainfall amount within the within the 300-km diameter of the cyclone is from five to 15 millimeters per hour, whichis classified as “moderate to heavy.”
PAGASA also advised that fishing boats and other small seacrafts not to venture out into the eastern seaboards of Central and Southern Luzon and of Visayas due to Tropical Depression “Basyang” and the Northeast Monsoon.
Aurelio said the rest of Luzon including Metro Manila will not be affected by the cyclone and will continue to experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with possible occurrence of light rains until Sunday only because of the cold northeast monsoon.
Meanwhile, PAGASA said the cyclone is projected to be at 152 km North Northeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur by Saturday morning.
By Sunday morning, it is expected to be at 189 km northeast of Puerto Princesa City and 706 km northwest of Puerto Princesa City or outside the PAR on Monday moring. PNA
