The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in the Philippines, spearheaded by Ambassador Raymond Wang, in partnership with SM Aura Premier, has especially arranged for two-time Academy Award Best Director Ang Lee to come to the Philippines for the very first time for a homage event entitled “A Salute to Ang Lee” from November 28 to 29.
In cooperation with the Film Development Council of the Philippines and Warner Bros. Philippines, TECO will be holding a special by-invitation screening of Life of Pi and a historic open forum to be led by Director Ang Lee at SM Aura Cinema, where world-renowned Filipino directors like Tikoy Aguiluz, Brilliante Mendoza, and Erik Matti would participate in.
Known as the most successful Asian filmmaker to date, director Ang Lee is set to impart his cinematic genius with the Filipino audiences and film enthusiasts. His most recent masterpiece, Life of Pi (2012), garnered applause from award-giving bodies and had raked in about US$500 million worldwide. For this film, he was bequeathed his second Best Director honor at the 85th Academy Awards, successfully securing his position among the greatest directors of our era.
Among his other famous works include Pushing Hands (1992), The Wedding Banquet (1993), Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), Hulk (2003), Brokeback Mountain (2005) and Lust, Caution (2007). To date, he has been conferred 12 Academy Awards and nine Golden Globes.
In recent years, TECO has been promoting a wide range of substantive cooperation plans with the Philippines, exemplifying our firm dedication to cultivating a closer relationship with our closest neighbor. Among the avenues that we have undertaken for this endeavor, we have considered films as a far-reaching cultural medium in conveying Taiwanese art, narrative, and insights to Filipinos.
