TUGUEGARAO CITY: An incoming college freshman took his own life on Friday upon realizing that he could not enroll because his parents do not have money for his tuition.
Denmark Gabug of San Lorenzo Village, San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte province, used a nylon cord to end his life. His family found his lifeless body hanging from the ceiling inside his room.
The victim’s mother, Cynthia, said there was no indication that Denmark was contemplating to kill himself even if he knew that the family was having a hard time raising the minimum enrollment fee with barely a week to go before the opening of classes.
There were reports, however, that Denmark was anxiously waiting for his tuition money and was depressed because his enrolment was delayed.
This is the second reported suicide among students with financial difficulties. In March this year, Kristel Tejada, a freshman at the University of the Philippines-Manila, committed suicide by drinking silver cleaner days after she was forced to file for a leave of absence for failing to pay her tuition on time.
