Teng siblings, Jeric of University of Santo Tomas (UST) and Jeron of De La Salle University, are bracing for a tough series when their teams collide in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 76 men’s basketball best-of-three championship showdown beginning on Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum.
Jeric and Jeron are the talented sons of former Philippine Basketball Association star Alvin Teng.
“Well what can I say I’m very, very happy because I will meet my brother (Jeron) in the finals although it will be only just competitive basketball and nothing personal about it,” said Jeric.
UST made a historic feat last Saturday by becoming the only No. 4 team to beat a No. 1 squad since the Final Four format was introduced in 1994. The Growling Tigers defeated the top seed National University Bulldogs twice in their Final Four match up (71-62 and 76-69).
“For my part, I’m so happy the wish of my brother has been granted and this is a rare opportunity for both of us,” said the 19-year-old Jeron. “You saw it how strong UST was against NU, so we need to prepare for it.”
Jeric and Jeron agreed that the UST-La Salle match will be a classic showdown since both teams have won against each other during the elimination round. UST won in the first round in overtime, 63-58, while La Salle won in its second encounter, 69-64.
Both teams also are hungry for a title since UST last won a title in 2006 against Ateneo de Manila University while La Salle was triumphant in 2007 against University of the East.
