Jeron Teng sank a crucial jumper in the dying seconds to tow De La Salle University to a 66-64 win over defending champion Ateneo de Manila University in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 76 men’s basketball tournament on Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Green Archers improved to 7-4 to take the solo third spot while the Blue Eagles fell to fourth with a 6-5 mark.
Almond Vosotros led La Salle with 19 points, while Teng finished with eight points.
Teng evaded Ateneo rookie Chris Newsome’s defense and took the game-winning basket for the Green Archers.
Earlier, University of Santo Tomas (UST) survived a double overtime game over erstwhile leader Far Eastern University (FEU), 79-78, behind the efforts of Cameroonian Karim Abdul and Aljon Mariano.
Abdul finished with 24 points while Mariano poured in 21 points and Kevin Ferrer scattered 15 points for UST which improved to 6-5.
Mariano tied the count at 62-all with a three-pointer in the last 4.9 seconds in the regulation.
Terrence Romeo threw a desperate heave before the buzzer sounded that forced the first overtime.
Although FEU took a slim 70-67 lead in the first overtime with only 10 seconds remaining, UST’s Clark Bautista drained a three-pointer to forge a 70-all deadlock. The Tamaraws failed to score in the remaining seconds as the game went to second overtime.
Ferrer opened the second overtime with two free throws for a 72-70 UST lead, but Belo scored three straight baskets to hand FEU a 76-72 advantage with less than two minutes left.
But the Growling Tigers never gave up as Abdul and Mariano scored the needed baskets to snatch the lead once again, 79-76, with only 32.3 seconds remaining. FEU’s Mike Tolomia hit a basket to cut the lead to just one, 78-79, before Abdul blocked Tamaraws center Mark Belo’s potential game-winning basket with only few ticks left in second extension frame
FEU dropped to 8-4 win-loss log.
