TACLOBAN CITY: Some 5,805 scholarship slots have been approved by the Technical Education Skills and Development Authority (TESDA) central office for implementation in Eastern Visayas as of July 18 this year.
TESDA offers training for work scholarship program (TWSP) and the Private Education Student Financial Assistance (PESFA) both dedicated to technical and vocational courses.
Imelda Malatbalat, officer-in-charge of TESDA regional operations division in Region 8, disclosed that Eastern Visayas has a total allocation of Php31.95 million for the 4,737 slots under TWSP and Php14.18 million under PESFA for 2044 slots this 2014.
As of July 18, the central office approved TWSP qualification map for 4,092 slots amounting to Php27.6 million and 1,714 slots for PESFA worth Php11.9 million.
The qualification map contains programs and projects that should be implemented in local government units, their number of beneficiaries, training vehicle and appropriation, she explained.
She added that they are still waiting for other provinces to submit their qualification maps for PESFA.
Malatbalat admitted that they are way below their target for this year citing super typhoon Yolanda as one of the factors.
With the case of TWSP, she mentioned that TESDA central office is very meticulous in approving qualification maps because they still have to consider the employment viability of the program or project indicated by LGUs.
Nonetheless, she said that they have prepared a catch up plan and they hoped to post a 100 percent accomplishment by November this year. PNA
