The term “life peg” is used to define a person whose life we wish to emulate. In today’s modern world, it is often used as a hashtag for someone who lives glamorously.
One of my favorite life pegs is Chalk magazine’s resident fashion girl, Kate Paras. As the fashion editor of Chalk and a stylist, Kate exudes the grace of any modern day fashion icon while maintaining an air of kindness and humility. Women everywhere would refer to her job as the ultimate dream job and Kate agrees, to some extent, “In a sense, my job as a magazine editor can be called a “dream world”, what with beautiful things, people, and places I constantly encounter on a daily basis.”
But for her, who has been with Chalk for eight years now, it’s not all glitz and glamour. “Behind that dream world is a ton of hard work, discipline, and work ethic that needs to be maintained in order for one to thrive in this industry,” she said.
She is also quick to point out that some people might see their jobs as “shallow” or “easy” but Kate ensues that it takes a lot of hard work to not just survive but thrive in the industry.
She noted, “You have to have passion for what you do, and you have to have the discipline to perform well in your role.”
Describing all the tasks demanded by her role is exhaustive enough all of which she does on her own, “I do a lot of conceptualizing, research, writing, pulling out, styling, networking, and coordination in my job as fashion editor, and I can say that I learned to do it all the hard way. I’ve never had any assistant save for some interns that help along the way, but at the end of the day, I know that I only have myself to rely on in getting the job done.”
Also a stylist to celebrities and icons, Kate infuses each project with her own persona while making sure that her client’s personality shines through, “My style is always based on a person’s personality. I’ve done a short stint of celebrity styling as well, and when I was doing that, I tried to make sure that the celebrity’s own style would shine, and that I won’t try to make the person look like me.”
What’s refreshing about Kate however is the fact that she is not defined by the job she does, “I believe in the saying that what you do for a living does not define who you are.”
She goes on to talk about what makes her life full, a trait that I admire the most, “There’s a whole lot of other things that make up who I am. Outside of my job, I love cooking, and eating good food!” Her love for food is refreshing considering the industry she is in but Kate who tries her hand in cooking and loves to try new restaurants isn’t one to deprive herself, “I try to strike a balance between eating real, healthy, whole foods, as well as treating myself to the more indulgent treats out there, deprivation is something I don’t practice. Life’s too short to be obsessed about every single calorie.”
Spending time with her loved ones is also a priority, “I think I’ve already passed the stage in life where the feel to be out all the time is a must, and I’m loving it this way. Proper rest is something I value, and so I try my best to not spread myself out too thin. Now that I’m in my early 30s, I’ve learned to separate the things of value, from the things that are just not.”
Personally, this is what makes Kate the ultimate life peg. She is one who vibrates not just positivity but also a kind heart who focuses on the most important things in life.
She is a walking irony because she proves that fashion girls (along with Chalk EIC Elaine Carag) can be the warmest, most kindhearted people in the industry whose only aim is to inspire others to live the life of their dreams.
In fact, at the end of the day, she believes the greatest fulfillment of her job is the ability to influence a generation as she works side by side with a great team, “The biggest fulfillment is the fact that I get to work with such a dynamic, talented team, and for them I am thankful. I only look forward to brighter memories for us at Chalk, as we continue to inspire, help, and guide the Filipino youth. No way but up!”
