How fans help in rise of OPM artists
In the Philippines, Filipino fans are the most passionate for they go the extra mile in supporting their idols. They have been here for as long as one can remember. They also name their groups after their beloved stars. Think the “Noranians” and the “Vilmanians” from decades back, and the Popsters of Pop Princess Sarah Geronimo in modern times.
But with the advent of social media, fans have taken their passion to a different platform. This, social media specialist Jeck Deocampo, confirmed to The Manila Times in an exclusive interview.
“Naiiba na ang channel o medium kung saan sila namamayagpag. Before, they were physically present during shootings, but this time mas nagiging maingay sila through social media—everybody can voice out what they want to say and also, social media became a good venue for artists to be closer to their fans,” Deocampo explained.
Recognizing this rising trend, Wish 107.5 came up with a competition specifically for “fandoms” of Original Pilipino Music artists.
Four finalist teams will battle it out for a chance to win a total of P2 million worth of cash prizes.
“We want to give it back to them, we want to recognize them and we want the artists to show their own support, this time, for the people who have been unceasingly supporting them,” Deocampo, who also strategizes for Wish FM said.
He also believes that the competition will also be beneficial to the radio station itself. He expressed, “With our station’s performance in social media and eventually translating social media movement to actual listeners to our station, pwede pala silang ipagsama. Kasi ang worry before ng mga tao, baka totally patayin ng new media ang traditional media.
Thankfully, we were able to prove that these two media can work hand in hand,” he concluded.
