How Easter egg traditions began
Decorating and hunting for eggs is a symbolic tradition that celebrates Easter Sunday, or the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It makes this joyous occasion more fun and exciting for young and old alike. After days of fasting, abstinence and personal reflection, Easter allows for renewal and new beginnings.
While the concept of Easter Egg hunts may seem quite modern, it is surprising to know that the use of an egg as an Easter symbol traces back to the ancient Egyptian, Persian, and Semitic civilizations that believed the origin of the world came in the form of an enormous egg.
During the spring season, pagans would celebrate and use the egg as a symbol of the rebirth of the Earth. The early Christians later adapted this practice and likened the egg to the tomb from where Christ rose.
Decorating these edible oblongs was dated as early as 60,000 years ago when Ostrich eggs with engravings were found in Africa.
Although the origin of this tradition is different depending on culture and religion, the egg symbolizes new life—a time to start fresh with a happier, more vibrant and positive perspective in life.
Once again, as the time for new beginnings approaches, The Manila Times compiles a series of Easter activities that you and your loved ones can enjoy.
Have a blessed Holy Week and a meaningful Easter celebration.
