Our skin is “happy” when it is healthy on the inside and beautiful on the outside. This is the premise of Filipina entrepreneur Jacqe Yuengtian-Gutierrez’ new cosmetics brand, aptly named Happy Skin.
A dream come true for the former Unilever executive, her delightful baby was officially born on October 18 through a ladies-who-lunch-type launch at Bizu in One Rockewell Center, Makati City on October 18.
“I worked for Unilever for a decade, and during that time, I found out that many women don’t use makeup because they’re actually afraid that makeup will harm their skin,” she related.
“Happy Skin is the first makeup line [developed by a Filipino]that offers an entire range of skin-caring makeup,” she claimed. “It was especially created for women who want to look naturally beautiful, but want to make sure that their skin is also cared for. It’s for women who don’t want to compromise on beauty.”
To make her product line the best it can be, Gutierrez invited a favorite Unilever endorser, commercial and ramp model Rissa Mananquil-Trillo to be a partner in Happy Skin. The two forged a friendship while working for the consumer goods giant, and kept in close contact even after Gutierrez had left the company.
Trillo said, “Jacqe and I have weathered many challenges and likewise celebrated many victories. Ours is a friendship that goes beyond the workplace. Every time I’m with her, she always makes me feel like we’re sisters, so partnering with Jacqe felt so logical and natural.”
As the story goes, Gutierrez called Trillo one day with the news that she has developed a skincare label and wanted the latter to be one of the first to try the products.
“She sent me samples and I was very impressed,” Trillo recalled. “I really loved the line so I asked her if I could invest in the label.”
Gutierrez was more than happy to take on her good friend as her business partner and officially gave her the title as Happy Skins’ official Chief Brand Officer. Gutierrez believes their partnership is perfect with her as the skincare expert and Trillo was the beauty expert.
‘Make-up that cares’
The Happy Skin partners excitedly unveiled the brand’s make-up range, which they described to be “created from scratch,” from the Japanese formulation, to the über cute packaging, as well as witty names for each product.
The Happy Skin range is comprised of Second Skin Crème Silicon Free Foundation; Don’t Get Mad, Get Even Hydrating Liquid Foundation; Get Cheeky with Me Blush; and Shut Up & Kiss Me Moisturizing Lippie. By mid-November, the brand is scheduled to launch its collection of eyeliners in mid-November, which they agree is “the essential” in every woman’s kikay kit.
Gutierrez and Trillo related that Happy Skin boasts of an impressive color range, and quality coverage and finish because the line was developed using Japanese technology, which, for them, is “the best in the world.”
More importantly, they stress that Happy Skin “cares for the skin too.”
Gutierrez explained, “For example, the SS [second skin]cream doesn’t have silicon so it doesn’t stress out the skin. But even without silicon—which makes other foundation stay—ours still last for six hours. Moreover, the skin gets supreme hydration from Cherry Blossom Extract.”
On Trillo’s turn to drum up another product, she said, “Our Shut Up & Kiss Me Lippie has the intensity of a lipstick, the hydration of a balm, and the shine of a gloss.”
Finally, Gutierrez rounded up, “All Happy Skin products are infused with special skincare ingredients, such as Japanese Tea Leaf, Shea Butter, Cherry Blossom, Hyaluronic Acid and Argan Oil, to name a few.”
With good stuff like these in every tube and pot, a woman’s skin will not only be beautiful for sure, but very happy indeed.
Happy Skin is currently distributed exclusively at select Plains & Prints stores. The line will be available very soon in major department stores and beauty outlets.
