DESPITE the recent issue surrounding the famous “You’re nothing but a second rate, trying hard copy cat!” line from the Bituing Walang Ningning (1985), the film’s latest adaptation in the form of a stage musical continues to run at the Newport Performing Arts Theater in Resorts World Manila (RWM), Pasay City.
After all, the show must go on.
Running until July 18 every Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Bituing Walang Ninging the Musical stars the fresh face and voice of Monica Cuenco as Dorina Pineda, who was originally played by Megastar Sharon Cuneta in the movie.
Filling in the shoes of Cherie Gil—who tried to claim the rights to the infamous “second rate, trying hard copycat” phrase—as Lavinia Arguelles is feisty actress Cris Villonco. Completing the roster of main stars is singer turned stage actor Mark Bautista as Nico Escobar (Christopher de Leon in the movie).
Breathing new life to the film, which was also made into a teleserye in 2006, is stage master Freddie Santos as director and screenwriter.
“Indeed, Bituing Walang Ningning, the Musical, is truly special as it is the first original Filipino musical we have produced to date. It has always been one of RWM’s advocacies to champion Filipino talent and help nurture the performing arts in the country,” announced Kingson Sian, RWM CEO and president, at the show’s gala night.
For his part, Vic del Rosario, Viva Communications chairman of the board and CEO, commented that the film is one of the most memorable that Viva Films has ever produced. “Its tale of success against great odds and the triumph of true love easily captivated audiences and lives on in the hearts of many,” he said.
Song-wise, the musical features a host of memorable Original Pilipino Music hits written by Willy Cruz, and played by the Manila Philharmonic Orchestra for the musicale under the baton of Maestro Rodel Colmenar.
Also starring in the production are award-winning stage performers Michael Stuart Williams, Jon Santos and Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo, together with PBB star Ronnie Liang and TV personality John Nite, among others
