An ally for alcohol drinkers, athletes and all who seek to be healthy
As most people know, glutathione exists in every cell of the human body. Its function is complex and remains the subject of ongoing research. For Filipinos, however, taking this substance mostly means skin lightening and an overall improved complexion.

But did you know that besides skin lightening and beautifying, glutathione has also been found as an effective supplement to detoxify liver and other harmful toxins ingested by people on a daily basis? This and more were the topics covered at a discussion aimed at raising the Filipino’s level of awareness regarding the popular supplement.

Mounted by food supplement brand VIDA NutriSciences and Japan’s Kohji Life Sciences, the forum zoomed in on glutathione’s importance and its depleting level in bodies as people age, and most interestingly its hidden benefits.

Kohjin Life Sciences members Yusuke Sauchi and Hitomi Ito together with and Wataru Aoi, Assistant Professor at Kyoto Prefectural University in Japan, explained that the body’s naturally occurring glutathione definitively improves liver function, so it made sense for health-conscious consumers to use it as a diet supplement.

According to the panel, the modern world presents toxins that “had not been voluntarily introduced to body systems.” Pollution and the wide use of pesticides containing nickel, lead, cadmium and mercury permeate the air humans breathe as well as the food they eat.

Unfortunately, as the volume of glutathione the body produces and maintain decrease through aging, people become more prone to these toxins.

“Our body naturally produces glutathione but it is depleted by various factors that are common to us such as stress, pollution, aging, alcohol and other vices, and even heavy exercise. That’s why it’s important to supplement on glutathione—it is an anti-oxidant that boosts the immune system and detoxifies our system,” emphasized Hitomi Ito, Kohjin’s Global Sales and Marketing Bio-Chemicals Division.

He further explained that by forming conjugates with environmental toxins and heavy metals, glutathione forces elimination of these harmful substances. Of course, it is impossible to combat oxidation through dietary supplements alone, but according to studies, the antioxidant benefit of Vitamin C, for example, is nearly doubled in combinatory effect with glutathione.

“The result in taking the substance is healthy, prolific cell life, resistance to aging and a protraction of the glow of youth that people experience early in their lives, before age takes its effect on glutathione volumes in the body,” Ito shared.

    For alcohol drinkers
Meanwhile, the damaging effects of alcohol on the liver were also well documented and established to be unavoidable. However, the experts related that there is very little awareness over the more pernicious and widespread non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, the precursor to metabolic syndrome, types 1 and 2 diabetes, cirrhosis and liver cancer.

Research continues to show that glutathione increases liver efficiency. Consequently, this reduces the uptake of fatty acids in the system, and strengthens the liver’s detoxification and immunization functions, helping to allay and possibly reverse the onset of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. By taking glutathione prior to drinking alcohol, significant decrease in hangover symptoms like nausea, vomiting, concentration, and headache was also noted.

“Glutathione is actually being consumed by people who always drink alcohol. It makes your liver healthy to prevent it from collecting fatty acid, and helps the liver of those who like to take more alcohol. This is not to encourage you to drink more, of course, but if you are taking glutathione—like 500 milligram before you drink alcohol—it will take more time before a person gets drunk,” Rodrigo Silvestre, President and Managing Director of Holchem Industrial Sales, Inc., the exclusive importer and distributor of Kohjin glutathione in the Philippines explained. “This is because when you metabolize alcohol it forms into aldehydes, and you will not have a hangover. If you do find yourself having a hangover in the morning, glutathione will also collate and will make you feel better,”

    For athletes
Because such popular sports such as distance running and weight training are forms of self-induced stress, Kohjin’s researchers found that the same biochemical mechanisms that facilitate improved physical response to stressors would benefit the overall well-being of athletes.

According to panel’s studies, glutathione leads to improved conditioning against fatigue during vigorous physical activity.

“The results made it clear that ingesting glutathione improves lipid metabolism and acidification in muscle during exercise, which leads to increased lipid metabolism and decreased muscle fatigue,” Kohjin’s research indicated.

    For everyone
Another relevant health benefit unknown to many Filipinos is that glutathione is an effective immunity booster against deadly diseases such as AIDS, cancer, and even cardiac diseases. In addition to this, glutathione helps in keeping our physique in shape and improves male fertility by providing the needed nutrients for the sperm.

“Glutathione can be taken by people as early as the age of 12. The best time in taking glutathione is when your stomach is empty, like before going to bed or early in the morning. There are no reports of glutathione overdose but it should be only taken for a maximum of two capsules per day,” reminded Ito.
