Anomalies in the government are laid bare to public eyes when lawmakers themselves are cornered by their wrong doings, an official of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) said on Wednesday.
Bishop Broderick Pabillo, auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Manila and Chair of the Episcopal Commission on Social Action, Justice and Peace of the CBCP, said that Sen. Ramon Revilla Jr. would appear sincere to the people who voted for him in the previous elections if he had revealed everything he knew about President Benigno Aquino 3rd’s lobbying scheme during the impeachment of former Supreme Court (SC) Chief Justice Renato Corona, an official of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).
He added that what he saw was just Revilla protecting his own interests and not the people’s.
“They are protecting themselves, di naman talaga interes ng bayan ang tinitingnan kung kailan ipit saka lang magsasabi ng ganun,” Pabillo said.
“Hindi naman tama iyon,” he added.
Likening the CJ Corona’s impeachment to the Reproductive Health (RH) Law, the prelate believes that the President had also influenced some lawmakers to ensure that the controversial law be approved.
Pabillo said that the President should be true to his words when he meant about independence in all branches of the government.
He believes that what the President has done to Corona’s impeachment was “unethical.”
In Revilla’s privileged speech on Monday, he alleged that Aquino has asked him to vote for Corona’s conviction.
