AL Thornton powered Northern Luzon Expressway’s (NLEX) 106-79 victory over Blackwater on Tuesday in the Philippine Basketball Association Season 40 Commissioners Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
The 6’10 former National Basketball Association player Thornton notched 39 points via 14-of-20 shooting in the field plus 15 rebounds to lead the Road Warriors to its first win after four games.
“It’s nice to get our first win this conference. Pep talk with management yesterday was key to this breakthrough win,” said NLEX head coach Boyet Fernandez. “We’ve been practicing really well but it didn’t materialize during the game.”
Thornton led NLEX’s 24-11 run in the first quarter and further boosted their lead to 84-49 at the end of third period. The Road Warriors were never threatened the rest of the game.
Rudy Lingganay, Nino Canaleta and Jonas Villanueva posted nine points each, while Borgie Hermida and veteran Paul Asi Taulava added eight points each for NLEX.
Bryan Faundo and import Marcus Douthit scored 17 and 15 points, respectively for the Blackwater Elite, who failed to capitalize on the momentum of their win against Philippine Cup champion San Miguel Beer last week.
