AT least three persons, including a nine-year old boy, were killed after series of landslides triggered by heavy rains hit two small mining villages in Rosario town Agusan del Sur on Monday, police reported on Wednesday.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) operations center in Camp Crame identified the landslide fatalities as Ceferino Garcia and Isagani Terio Depillo, both from Barangay Santa Cruz, and nine-year-old Dominick Hatico of Barangay San Andres.
The reports said Garcia was killed after he was buried by a landslide that occurred at around 7:30 a.m. at a hillside portion of Purok Loring Bentiliason in Sitio Tinago, Barangay Santa Cruz of the said town.
Investigation revealed that Garcia and his two sons were panning for gold at the said place when the victim noticed the nearby slope was slowly eroding due to heavy rains, the reports said.
The reports said the victim tried to rescue his sons, but was instead buried by collapsing heavy soil killing him almost instantly. His death was reported to the police by his son, Allan Garcia.
A few hours later, Depillo was killed by a landslide while panning for gold at the hillside portion of Purok Bahi, Kumagingking, also of Barangay Santa Cruz. His body was recovered in the afternoon by rescue workers, the reports said.
Meanwhile, Hatico was killed in another landslide that buried his house in Purok 11, Tinago, Barangay San Andres also in Rosario town, Agusan del Sur, the reports said.
The reports said the young boy was sleeping at the back of their house while his family were preparing their breakfast when the landslide occurred at around 9am.
