Three lawmen survive Kalinga helicopter crash

BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya: A police officer and two others survived after their helicopter crashed on Wednesday noontime into the mountain town of Tinglayan in Kalinga province.

Army reports said that, the victims were identified only as Sr. Supt. Emmodias, chief of operations of the Cordillera regional police office while the pilot was identified as Chief Insp. Vitug, and co-pilot as Police Officer 3 Duque.

The three policemen were immediately rescued by an Air Force plane, all of them sustained only minor injuries and are now being treated at a hospital in Tabuk City, the capital of Kalinga, reports said.

While about to land at the police command post in Tinglayan at about 11:15 am, the helicopter reportedly suffered mechanical malfunction causing it to crash into Mount Bitulayungan, reports said.

Initial investigation is also considering strong wind and the chopper’s heavy load as “probable cause” of the accident besides the chopper’s mechanical trouble.

The chopper’s rotor blade and body frame, reports said, sustained damages as a result of the crash.

Police said the chopper took off Kalinga provincial police office in Tabuk City and was conducting an aerial marijuana eradication survey when the incident happened.
