• Three stars and their ‘gifts’

A promising Filipino movie is set to open on September 3 from Viva Films and MVP Entertainment, which stars top celebrities Anne Curtis, Sam Milby and Cristine Reyes.

From the trailer The Manila Times caught this week, the film, simply titled The Gifted, shows huge potential in delivering something new for moviegoers. Consider the following elements: Screen goddesses Anne and Cristine play childhood best friends who are both geniuses in school. Anne is Zoe Tuazon, a rich, overweight and aggressive mestiza, while Crstine is Aica Tabayoyong, a poor nerdy student with a bad case of teenage acne and nearsightedness.

The two top their class year after year, but eventually become bittersweet rivals for campus athlete Mark Ferrer, portrayed by Sam.

In an effort to outsmart and outclass each other, Zoe and Aica each undergo cosmetic surgery and become ravishing vixens engaged in ugly confrontations.

Besides the difficulty of wearing a fat suit and heavy prosthetics, respectively, the two actresses, who starred in the adult blockbuster No Other Woman (2011), agree that The Gifted itself is a “genius” of a motion picture.

“To start with, our director Chris Martinez is a genius, which is why you can say the same of the entire movie,” elaborated Anne. “When I read the script, I knew I had to do it because it’s something never been done in Philippine cinema. It’s a dark comedy. Don’t expect slap stick because you’ll have to use your mind in appreciating the script.”

Promising to talk more about the movie in the days to come, the three actors indulged the press in playtime during The Gifted’s grand launch this week at The Library in Metro Walk, Pasig City.

They each answered the question, “What is your greatest gift?” and here’s what they had to say:

    — Anne Curtis “I’m gifted with the ability of speed-reading. Ang bilis kong magbasa! You know the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy? I finished them all in four days. I read Mitch Albom’s First Phone Call from Heaven in two. But if you want to talk about material gifts, I would have to say it’s a mic stand and guitar my parents gave me when I was four years old. Even if I couldn’t carry a tune—much as I can’t now— who would have thought I’d actually have my own concerts one day and be in showbiz?"

    — Sam Milby "I’ve always been athletic and I think I’ve been gifted in being able to get in to most any kind of sports. I easily learn the skills whether it’s basketball, football, tennis, martial arts, even ice skating. But my two passions are motocross and music and I got into them when my dad gave me my first dirt bike and my sister my first guitar as gifts."

    — Cristine Reyes "Gifted ako sa part na pag may ginusto ako, tutok ako doon at naalagaan ko kung ano man yon. The best gift I ever received though was my second life after (Typhoon) Ondoy. Ang daming namatay noon but I survived. (Cristine lived in Provident Village in Marikina City, which submerged houses during Typhoon Ondoy in 2009. She was rescued along with her family from the top of their roof.)"
