• Thumb injury could keep Young out for Lakers start

LOS ANGELES: Los Angeles Lakers guard Nick Young will undergo surgery on Monday (Sunday in Manila) to repair a torn right thumb ligament and could miss the start of the NBA season, the team announced on Saturday. Young suffered the injury during a practice workout this past week and an MRI exam Friday revealed the complete ligament tear. The Lakers re-signed the 29-year-old backcourt standout to a four-year deal worth more than $21 million (16.78 million euros) in July after he scored a career-high 17.9 points over 64 games last season in his first campaign with his hometown team.
