NAVOTAS Mayor John ReyTiangco assured fishermen he will act on the extortion racket allegedly perpetrated by some members of the Maritime Police and Bantay-Dagat of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR). Tiangco met with the Samahan ng Mangingisda sa Buong Navotas Inc. (SMBNI) led by Nick Mariano based on the information relayed by The Manila Times. Mariano said the alleged extortionists is headed by a high ranking Maritime officer and Bantay-Dagat agents collect P500 for every fisherman’s boat plying on Navotas waters and the fish port. On top of the fixed collection, he added, are the occasional requests for birthday celebration. Tiangco said he has reason to believe that the fishermen’s complaints have basis for investigation.
