The Philippine Swimming League (PSL) picked 49 more swimmers from Luzon Region for the prestigious World Summer University Games scheduled next year in Gwangju, South Korea.
Susan Papa Swimming Academy (SPSA) standouts Patrick Tierie and Christen Mercado of University of the Philippines led the qualifiers who were selected based on their performances in the 59th PSL Leg Series dubbed as the 5th Sen. Nikki Coseteng Cup held in Manila.
Tierie clocked 26.07 in 50m butterfly and 25.44 in 50m freestyle while Mercado timed 28.37 in 50m backstroke and 25.25 in 50m freestyle. They are aiming to break the Philippine records in those events, according to Papa.
“The PSL is maximizing the number of entries who will make it to the 2015 Universiade. We want them to know that there is such event more than the Southeast Games and Asian Games in preparation to the Olympics,” said PSL President Susan Papa.
“There are 198 participating countries in the Universiade. It’s a fantastic cultural event, a once in a lifetime experience for every student-athlete. I want our swimmers to share their Universiade experience to their fellow swimmers and upcoming swimmers,” added Papa.
