Top seed Patrick John Tierro survived junior campaigner Marcen Angelo Gonzales, 6-4, 6-3, to reach the men’s singles third round of the 33rd Philippine Columbian Association (PCA) Open presented by Cebuana Lhuillier and Metro Global Holdings on Monday at the PCA indoor courts in Paco, Manila.
Tierro, a member of the Philippine Davis Cup team, will be meeting Bernardine Siso who toppled Angelo Esguerra, 7-6 (5), 6-2.
Defending champion Johnny Arcilla, on the other hand, posted an easy 6-0, 6-0 victory over Alberto Villamor in the tournament supported by Dunlop, Fujidenzo/Whirlpool, Babolat, Hon. Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao, Head, Accel, Malate Bayview Mansion, Coca-Cola Bottlers Phils. Inc., Philippine Prudential Life Insurance Company Inc. and Seno Hardware.
The 34-year-old veteran will be pitted against unseeded Jed Olivarez who stunned No. 14 Dheo Talatayod, 6-2, 6-2.
“I just minimized my errors because I need to save my energy for my next important games,” said Arcilla, who is eyeing his ninth title in the event supported by United Auctioneers Inc. Foton, Philippine Sports Commission, TLH Sports & Wellness Center/Solinco, Avida Land Corporation, Stronghold Insurance, Ryobi MHI, GMA 7 and TV 5.
Joining Tierro and Arcilla in the third round were No. 3 pick Marc Anthony Reyes, fifth pick Rolando Ruel Jr., No. 6 Alberto Lim Jr. and No. 7 Marc Anthony Alcoseba.
Reyes downed Bernan Lou Bering, 6-3, 6-0; Ruel defeated Jigo Pena, 6-4, 6-2; Lim whipped Fritz Verdad, 6-0, 6-1; and Alcoseba squeaked past Rommel Openiano, 6-2, 6-4.
Arvin Ruel and Ronald Joven also made it into the next round at the expense of Kristian Tesorio (3-6, 6-4, 6-1) Roderick Agna (6-3, 6-1) respectively.
The third round in the men’s singles event will take place on Wednesday, November 19, as the women battle it out in the singles division. Defending champion Marian Jade Capadocia will face Angela Cabaral today, followed by the Patrimonio siblings Clarice and Christine who will go up against Anna Vienna Bienes and Chloe Mae Saraza, respectively.
