THE University of Santo Tomas forged a playoff for the remaining men’s semifinals berth with a 3-2 win over Ateneo on Saturday in the UAAP Season 79 badminton tournament.
Both teams ended up tied in 4-3, the Growling Tigers and the Blue Eagles will meet again at 8 a.m. today at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall to determine the last semis qualifier.
De La Salle took the third semifinals slot following a 5-0 blanking of Adamson University, despite ending up tied with UST and Ateneo. The Green Archers (4-3) clinched the No. 3 seed by virtue of a higher quotient over the Tigers and the Eagles.
Titleholder National University took the outright slot in the best-of-three championship series after winning all seven ties in the eliminations, while University of the Philippines finished second with a 6-1 card.
The Bulldogs, now handled by coach Jaime Llanes, actually have won 25 straight dating back to the 2014 season.
By clinching the No. 2 seed, the Fighting Maroons bagged the twice-to-beat edge in the step-ladder semifinals.
In the women’s division, NU snared the last semifinals slot with a 3-2 nipping of Far Eastern University.
The vastly-improved Lady Bulldogs wound up fourth with a 4-3 card and will take third-ranked Lady Eagles in the first step-ladder at 1 p.m. today.
Ateneo routed UST, 5-0, for its fifth win in seven ties.
Three-peat seeking UP also secured an outright passage in the best-of-three Finals after going 7-0 in the eliminations while De La Salle captured the twice-to-beat bonus in the stepladder semis after ending up in second spot at 6-1.
