Former champions University of Santo University (UST) and Far Eastern University (FEU) will strengthen their Final Four bids in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 76 women’s volleyball today at The Arena in San Juan City.
UST and FEU will collide at 4 p.m. while University of the East (UE) battles University of the Philippines (UP) at 2 p.m.
The Lady Tamaraws are currently in fifth place with 2-3 followed by the Tigresses with 2-4. They are behind defending champion De La Salle University (5-0), National University (5-1), Ateneo de Manila University (5-1) and Adamson University (3-2).
UST is coming off a heartbreaking 15-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-20, 15-13 loss to Ateneo on Wednesday. But coach Odjie Mamon is still optimistic of their chances.
“We need to get as many wins as we can to make it to the Final Four.
We need to step up our game going into the second round of eliminations,” said Mamon, a former national team member.
Pamela Lastimosa led the Tigresses in their last game with 23 points while Camela Tunay, Chloe Cortez, Jem Gutierrez and setter Loren Lantin must also contribute big to churn out a convincing win.
The Lady Tamaraws, on the other hand, will be relying on veteran playmaker Gyselle Sy along with power-hitting Remy Palma, Samantha Dawson, and rookies Bernadeth Pons and Geneveve Casugod.
“Our aim this season is to make it to the Top 4. We missed it [Final Four] last year and we want to give the glory back to FEU,” said FEU head coach Shaq delos Santos.
FEU holds the most number of championship titles in the women’s division with 29.
