The University of Santo Tomas (UST) opened its Round 2 campaign in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 78 women’s volleyball tournament by trouncing University of the East (UE), 25-17, 25-23, 25-16, on Saturday at The Arena in San Juan City.

Team captain Ennajie Laure posted 15 markers, 14 kills and one block as UST improved its card to 4-4.

“Blessing pa rin at medyo nanalo kahit erratic, unstable ‘yung first two sets,” said UST head coach Emilio Reyes Jr.

“Buti nanalo tayo ng isang laro pero nasa bottom pa rin tayo. Buti naiba ‘yung schedule kung NU [National University] kalaban namin, ewan ko kung nasaan kami ngayon,” Reyes said.

Though at the losing end, the Lady Warriors tests the Tigresses mettle during the second frame when they easily exploited UST’s unstable reception and errors.

UE was leading 4-1 until Rondina plunged into action to allow her team to grab the lead 18-17.

The other contributors to UST’s victory were Cherry Ann Rondina who had 12 markers on 11 kills while Marivic Meneses and Jessey Laine De Leon each had six points.

UE remains at the bottom of the standings with eight lost and no win.

La Salle overpowered University of the Philippines, 27-25, 25-21,18-25, 23-25, 15-11, to book its second win of the season.
