The University of Santo Tomas (UST) opened its Round 2 campaign in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 78 women’s volleyball tournament by trouncing University of the East (UE), 25-17, 25-23, 25-16, on Saturday at The Arena in San Juan City.
Team captain Ennajie Laure posted 15 markers, 14 kills and one block as UST improved its card to 4-4.
“Blessing pa rin at medyo nanalo kahit erratic, unstable ‘yung first two sets,” said UST head coach Emilio Reyes Jr.
“Buti nanalo tayo ng isang laro pero nasa bottom pa rin tayo. Buti naiba ‘yung schedule kung NU [National University] kalaban namin, ewan ko kung nasaan kami ngayon,” Reyes said.
Though at the losing end, the Lady Warriors tests the Tigresses mettle during the second frame when they easily exploited UST’s unstable reception and errors.
UE was leading 4-1 until Rondina plunged into action to allow her team to grab the lead 18-17.
The other contributors to UST’s victory were Cherry Ann Rondina who had 12 markers on 11 kills while Marivic Meneses and Jessey Laine De Leon each had six points.
Meanwhile, Ma. Shaya Adorador recorded nine on top of seven spikes, one block and an ace for UE.
Judith Abil had seven while Celine Elaiza Domingo registered five points.
UST had more errors, 27, compared to UE’s 22.
UE remains at the bottom of the standings with eight lost and no win.
In the men’s division, De La Salle University and Ateneo De Manila University successfully won against their respective opponents in five grueling sets.
La Salle overpowered University of the Philippines, 27-25, 25-21,18-25, 23-25, 15-11, to book its second win of the season.
Raymark Woo helped La Salle with 23 kills and three blocks on top of his 27 markers while John Arjay Onia had 14 points including 11 spikes. La Salle improved its record to 2-6.
Wendel Miguel had 16 points over 15 spikes while Alfred Gerard Valbuena and John Mark Millete posted 15 markers apiece.
The La Salle-UP match lasted for one hour and fifty-eight minutes.
UP now holds 4-4 card.
In the other match, Ateneo subdued Far Eastern University, 19-25, 25-23, 24-26, 25-21, 15-11, during the two hour and eight minutes game.
Marck Jesus Espejo posted 18 points including 15 kills and two aces for Ateneo that remains leading with 7-1 record.
Gregorio Dolor, on the other hand, had 12 kills and three blocks off 16 points for FEU that now holds a 5-3 card.
