Fifteen-year old kiteboarder Christian Tio finished third in the 2016 Kiteboarding Youth Cup (KYC) at the Camping La Ballena Alegre in the coastal region of Costa Brava, Spain recently.
Tio, a Boracay native, made a podium finish in the under-19 men’s category. Maxime Chabloz of Switzerland won the tilt followed Roman Giuliano of France.
The Filipino-Norwegian was supposed to play in the under-17 but because of his above-average skill, the organizers decided to move him up to under-19 category. Despite the age discrepancy, Tio was seeded no. 1 among the competitors.
Tio used his signature moves to cruise into the final four during the tournament proper. Hampered by sporadic gusty winds in the semifinals, Tio lost Giuliano.
Tio previously finished second in the Junior Virgin Kitesurfing World Championships twice – in the 2014 and 2015 editions that were both held in Costa Brava.
Tio’s conditioning was held in several training centers, the first among them was the Ninja Academy, the Philippines’ first indoor parkour facility. He also utilized the Human Performance program at the Fitfast Wellness Center. His pre-world championships preparations culminated with calisthenics-based training courtesy of the Philippine Street Workout and Calisthenics Association.
Professional kiteboarder and coach Fabio Ingrosso has also taken the Filipino-Norwegian under his wing at Srilankakite – a kite school for professionals and beginners alike based in Sri Lanka.
Tio is now looking forward to the Pro World Kite Tour where he intends to test his mettle against renowned adult kiteboarders.
