TALK ‘N Text and San Miguel Beer, the top two seeded teams both armed with twice-to-beat advantage are gunning for semifinals slots when they face separate foes today in the quarterfinals of the 39th Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Commissioner’s Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Tropang Texters, the only unbeaten team with 9-0 slate at the end of the single round-robin elimination will meet Barangay Ginebra Barangay at 8 p.m. today. Talk ‘N Text needs only a win to oust the Gin Kings.
The San Miguel Beermen, on the other hand, which finished second carrying a 7-2 record, are expecting less trouble when they face seventh seed Air 21 Express at 5:45 p.m.
In the other quarterfinals matches, third seed Alaska (6-3) was still battling no. 6 San Mig Coffee (4-5), while no. 4 Rain or Shine (5-4) is yet to face no. 5 Meralco (5-4) at presstime.
Gabe Freeman’s effort was not enough for the Gin Kings to win over the Elasto Painters. But coach Ato Agustin remains hopeful of his wards’ chance of making it to the semifinals citing the 1999 All-Filipino Cup when they won twice over the top seed Tropang Texters (then known as Mobiline Phone Pals) through Bal David’s buzzer-beater jumper in the last two seconds resulting to an 82-81 quarterfinals triumph.
“From what we did and how we played last Sunday, I’m over satisfied but we did not get the victory that we wanted even if we played hard. I don’t want to let everybody down, I hope we can win against TNT,” said Freeman, a two-time best import in 2009 and 2010 that led San Miguel Beer to the 2009 championship and a runner-up finish in 2010.
