Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Francis Tolentino was two-and-a-half hours late to the official announcement of the 39th Metro Manila Film Festival’s (MMFF) eight official entries for 2013, but he tried his hand at wit to apologize for his tardiness.
Apparently, Tolentino was held up at a meeting with President Benigno Aquino 3rd for hours regarding the horrendous traffic caused by the floods in Metro Manila on Monday evening, and was even called back to return to the Palace when he had already left for the press conference in Quezon City.
“Tulad po ng Habagat, ang MMFF ay hindi natin maiiwasan,” he said to a roomful of movie producers, directors and members of the press at Dulcinea restaurant in Tomas Morato.
He went on to commend the industry for yet another batch of quality entries—15 in total—from which the eight scripts were chosen by the MMFF Executive Committee, saying there was no drought of talent in showbiz.
Tolentino, however, announced that the committee’s earlier plans of featuring an Animation Category in the annual festival will have to be postponed.
“Hindi natin narating ang animation category but I’m sure we will in the years to come,” he said. “Mahirap palang gawin yon—hindi kaya ng overnight, tulad ng solusyon sa flood control.”
The chairman announced the following films as the eight official finalists to the coming MMFF:
