AFTER its successful 2013 run, the British Embassy in Manila is once again holding its seven-month long “This is Great” campaign in the Philippines.

To kick off the embassy’s biggest cultural and economic project to present British lifestyle brands, a live broadcast of the theater production Coriolanus by William Shakespeare was held on August 29 at the Greenbelt 3 Cinema, Makati City.

No less than London’s National Theater Live performed the classic story on stage starring Tom Hiddleston, best known for his portrayal of the Marvel villain Loki in The Avengers and Thor.

British Ambassador Asif Ahmad led the launch attended by personalities from the diplomatic corps.

In his heart-warming welcoming speech, Ahmad said, “The tremendous success of our last Great campaign has prompted us to launch another fantastic line-up of events that features the full spectrum of the best in British industry, business, entertainment, fashion and the arts.”

The limited screenings of Coriolanus at select Ayala Malls cinemas on September 5 and 6 is just one of the exciting activities to watch out for.

The British diplomat shared, “The screening of National Theatre Live’s Coriolanus, will give Filipinos a glimpse of the world-class theater performances from London’s West End. I hope that seeing Coriolanus will entice you [Filipinos] to visit the United Kingdom, including Shakespeare’s Stratford upon Avon.”

Coriolanus is Shakespeare’s searing tragedy of political manipulation and revenge. When an old adversary threatens Rome, the city calls once more on her hero and defender: Coriolanus. As famine threatens the city, the citizens’ hunger swells to an appetite for change, and on returning from the field, Coriolanus must confront the march of “realpolitik” and the voice of an angry people.

Other Great events in the coming months will include a retail-shopping contest, the Philippine-British Friendship Week headlined by the Great Friendship Ball, the investment week, trade missions and the second Great British Festival.

“Come and experience our vibrant culture like the 49,000 Pinoys who toured Great Britain last year,” the British envoy invited.
