The country’s No. 1 junior tennis player Alberto “AJ” Lim Jr. is set to compete in the prestigious Osaka Mayor’s Cup in Japan this month.
The Osaka Mayor’s Cup, which is one of the five Grade A tournaments outside of the Grand Slams that carry the greatest ranking points in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior Circuit, will be held on Oct. 17-23 at the Utsubo Tennis Center.
Lim, a scholar at the LTA Academy based in Florida, has been away for a month. He will arrive on Oct. 14 and will fly to Japan the next day.
“I’ll try my best to improve my ITF rankings. I’m hoping to be in the Top in the junior world rankings at the end of the year,” said Lim in an interview on Wednesday.
Last August, Lim competed in the US Open Juniors but lost to world’s No. 22 Louis Wessels of Germany, 6-4, 4-6, 5-7, in the first round.
“Actually, before the US Open, I sprained my ankle so I was out for four weeks. I didn’t have the time to prepare that much,” explained Lim, a college freshman taking up management at the University of the East.
“I still feel some soreness but it’s definitely 80% better than it was when I was in the US Open,” said Lim, who also competed in the Australian Open Juniors and the French Open Juniors this year.
“I still have at least two weeks preparation before the Japan tournament, so I think I’ll be better na,” said Lim, who is currently No. 47 in the ITF Juniors. His best ranking was No. 12 last January. After the Osaka Mayor’s Cup, Lim will see action in two major tournaments in Florida – the Eddie Herr International Tennis Championship on Nov. 28 to Dec. 4 in Bradenton and Metropolitan Orange Bowl International Tennis Championship slated Dec. 7-13 in Plantation City.
