Top Rank Promotion has announced that Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire Jr. will fight Jamaican Nicholas “The Axe Man” Walters on October 18 to determine who will be the undisputed World Boxing Association (WBA) world featherweight champion.
The 12-round fight will be held at the Stub Hub Center in Carson, California, USA.
Donaire’s father said that his 31-year old son is doing well in eight to 10 rounds of sparring with Guy Robb at the Donaire Boxing Fitness Gym.
“Nonito got his power and speed back after few weeks of training. Yes, the fight is officially on according to Top Rank. He [Nonito] must move faster and avoid Walter’s power punches,” Nonito Sr. told The Manila Times in a phone interview.
“It’s an exciting fight but Nonito should throw accurate punches. Just what I’ve said before, we must avoid Walters power punches. That guy is a true power puncher,” added Nonito Sr. who also serves as the boxer’s strength and conditioning coach.
The unbeaten 28-year-old Walters, who holds a 24-0 win-loss record with 20 knockouts, KOed his last four opponents, including Donaire’s archrival Vic Darchinyan in May in Macau.
“It’s now time to prove who’s the best fighter in the 126 pounds division and this is my dream fight,” Walters told boxing website SweetScience.com.
Walters is the regular WBA world featherweight champion, while Donaire, who is the WBA Super featherweight titleholder. Both boxers fight in an orthodox stance.
Donaire (33-2 win-loss card with 21 knockouts) won the Super WBA featherweight crown after beating South African Simpiwe Vetyeka via technical decision in May in Macau.
The bout was halted in the fifth round and was decided through the scorecards after Donaire’s eyebrow sustained a deep cut from Vetyeka headbutt.
The Donaire-Walters bout is a co-main event of the fight between WBA and International Boxing Organization middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin and challenger World Boxing Council interim middleweight titleholder Marco Antonio Rubio.
