University of Santo Tomas’ (UST) Mark Alfafara and Ateneo de Manila University’s Marck Espejo lead the scoring department after the first round of eliminations of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 77 men’s volleyball tournament.
Alfafara, the Season 75 Most Valuable Player (MVP), had a total of 153 points highlighted by 137 from the attack line, 11 from blocks and five from service area while Espejo, the Season 76 MVP and Rookie of the Year, scored 140 points on 119 spikes, 10 blocks and 11 aces.
Fauzi Ismail of defending champion National University (NU) is ranked No. 1 in spiking department wit 54.40 accuracy rate while his teammate and former Finals MVP Peter Den Mar Torres tops the blocking area with 0.92 average denial per set.
Vince Mangulabnan also of NU is so far the best server in the league with 0.50 everage ace per set. Ateneo’s playmaker Esmilzo Polvorosa leads in the setting category with 8.78 excellent plays per set while Adamson University’s defensive gem Rence Melgar is ruling the digging (2.96 everage) and receiving (47.24 efficiency) departments.
NU and Adamson are sharing the lead with 7-1 followed by UST (5-2), Ateneo (5-2), University of the Philippines (3-4), Far Eastern University (2-5), De La Salle University (1-6) and University of the East (0-7).
The second round will begin on January 21 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City with NU facing UP at 8 a.m. and Adamson meeting La Salle at 10 a.m. in the men’s division while UP battles UE at 2 p.m. and FEU takes on La Salle at 4 p.m. in the women’s class.
