The 2016 Touge Battle race series heads down south on Sunday with the competitors facing a challenge from the twisty layout of the Batangas Race Circuit.

“We expect to have a field of more than 25 drivers racing for the top spots in their respective classes. Competitors will have to navigate through the more technical layout of the Batangas Race Circuit to earn their rights to call themselves Touge class champions this weekend,” said EZ Ligaya of race organizer Aggressive Line Events.

The third season of the Touge Battle series kicked off at the Clark International Speedway in Pam¬panga on January 17 with the Subaru STi driven by Hernel Castillo and the Toyota Yaris of Venet Felisco emerging the winners.

Ligaya said there are younger drivers who have signed up for the series and are expected to give the veterans a tough battle.

“Lots of young blood are challenging the veterans to become the next set of champions for Touge Battle 2016,” he added.

In the first round, Castillo won in the Turbo-plus Class using his silver Subaru Impreza STI while Kevin Sugden and Angelo Elinon followed closely in second and third places, respectively. Elinon, despite his third place finish in the Turbo-plus Division, managed to bag the Newbie Division trophy.

In the Economy Division, last year’s third placer Felisco took top honors with his Toyota Yaris against defending champion Daniel Leonardo 3rd and newcomer Mars De Los Reyes.

Marbel Bayombong clinched the first win in the Regular Class in a close race against Norlan Orpilla and autocross champion Robert Tan.

In the Premium division, reigning champion Brennan Lim strengthened his grip in the top spot with a win in the opening races.

Touge Battle is essentially a cat-and-mouse chase type of racing where two cars compete with each other with the winner advancing to the next rounds via knockout system. Two cars take off from the starting line four seconds apart and negotiate a twisty track. The first car that takes off wins the race if it reaches the finish line more than four seconds ahead of the other car. For the second car to win, it must cross the finish line less than four seconds after the first car.

Ligaya said Touge Battle is supported by Autoperformance PH, Vic dealer of Achilles Radials, Studio 21 creatives, Rally Parts, The Inflatable Factory, Dreamsmed, SCAG, Prima Coffee, The Sushi Factory, Bridge¬stone Alabang, C! Magazine, 2NER magazine, Time Attack Manila, Legit Manila, Wheel-Spin, Gear and Turbo Time.
