More than 300 cyclists from all over Metro Manila are expected to participate in the first Tour de Manille on July 9 in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between France and the Philippines at the North Park SM by the Bay in Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay City.
“We are very happy to organize this event with Filipino bikers. In France, cycling is an important sport and we can use it to promote peace and raise awareness about climate change,” said Counselor for Cooperation and Cultural Affairs of the Embassy of France Yves Zoberman on Tuesday at the Biker’s Café in SM By the Bay.
“This race also shows France’s commitment in strengthening global camaraderie through sports,” he added.
Race organizer Jack Yabut of the Firefly Brigade said there will be four divisions in the five-kilometer race – the fun ride and chase, competitive race for men, competitive race for women and Le Grand Spectacle Elite Pro Class.
“The race is not yet sanctioned by the PhilCycling since this will be our first year. But if the race gets bigger next year and more riders will join, we’ll ask the PhilCycling to sanction the race,” said Yabut.
The race will start along Seaside Boulevard at SM By the Bay southbound lane and the finish line will be placed at the seaside boulevard before the pedestrian lane.
The Tour de Manille is patterned after the Tour de France, which is considered to be the biggest annual sporting event in the world.
