EASTERN SAMAR: The incumbent town mayor was relieved from her position on Wednesday for using P41,801.14 in public funds to buy spare parts and tires for her vehicle in 2012. The Office of the Ombudsman has ordered the dismissal from government service of Mayor Candida Gabornes of Lawaan and the filing of graft and malversation of public funds charges against her before the Sandiganbayan. Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales said that criminal charges would also be filed against Municipal Accountant Pedro Gabornes and Municipal Treasurer Ruben Baet. Gabornes, who was re-elected in the May 2013 polls, was found guilty of illegally using public funds to reimburse repair and maintenance expenses for her Mitsubishi Montero. She said that the three officials acted together to facilitate the illegal release of public funds. Lawaan, a small coastal town in Eastern Samar, was among the areas hit by Super Typhoon Yolanda last year.
