A TRANSPORT group leader warned of another strike if the government would push through with its jeepney modernization program.

“Kung itutuloy nila, mag-transport strike kami pero wala pang date. I-aannounce namin pag may date na,” George San Mateo, president of the Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operator Nationwide (Piston), in a phone call over the weekend.

(If they will push through with it, we will stage a strike although no date has been set.)

According to San Mateo, the strike may either be done “before New Year or after New Year.”

Piston, along with the No to Jeepney Phaseout Coalition, conducted an overnight candle lighting vigil in Mendiola on Saturday “to condemn government harassment and violation of [the]human rights of George San Mateo and other drivers opposing the jeepney phaseout.”

San Mateo was arrested by policemen on Tuesday amid allegations of violation of the Public Service Act after conducting a transport strike last February. San Mateo posted a P4,000 bail after the arrest.

Piston would have held a transport strike on December 4 and 5 but cancelled it after Senator Grace Poe called for a hearing on Monday, December 11, between Piston and Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade.

Poe is the chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Services. REICELENE IGNACIO
