BAGUIO CITY: The transport groups operating in the city and in Benguet province have announced its opposition to the idea of reducing current fares as prices for gas continue to decline. Perfecto Itliong, Federation of Jeepney Operators and Drivers Association of Baguio and Benguet (FEJODABB) president, said that the jeepney fares in Metro Manila can easily be rolled back because fuel prices in the capital city really went down. This is not the case in Baguio and Benguet, he claimed, as local oil prices are higher by P3 per liter. He added that vehicles running in Baguio City and Benguet, which are both characterized by slopes, consume more fuel than its counterparts in lowland cities and provinces. Itliong added that the Land Transportation Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB) should also consider the cost of maintenance before ordering any reduction in fares.
