COTABATO CITY: Officials and residents of Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) marked the country’s 116th Independence Day on Thursday with tree-planting activities in Maguindanao.
ARMM officials led by Regional Executive Secretary Laisa Alamia join environmentalists and security forces in planting thousands of Narra, Mahogany and Antipolo seedlings in Parang town.
Alamia said the activity was in line with the Department of Environmental and National Resources (DENR-ARMM) effort to plant 10 million trees in the region in 2016 before the new autonomous political entity is established.
The DENR-ARMM has already facilitated the planting of more than two million forest tree seedlings in a continuing “greening program” launched early this year.
In Ampatuan town, Maguindanao Gov. Esmael “Toto” Mangudadatu also joined army’s battalion commanders in planting giant bamboo trees at the site of the November 2009 “Maguindanao massacre”.
Other core areas of ARMM that will be replaced by new Bangsamoro government held flag-raising ceremonies.
