TRANSPORTATION Secretary Arthur Tugade said on Monday that only President Rodrigo Duterte can ask him to resign, in response to the call of two lawmakers to step down amid the problems faced by the Metro Rail Transit-3.
“Only the President can ask me to resign. Hindi lahat ng problema inaaddress ng resignation (Not all problems are addressed by resignations). I only serve at the pleasure of the President,” Tugade said in an ambush interview during the commissioning of three new multi-role response vessels and three rigid hull inflatable boats from Japan.
The commissioning was held at the Philippine Coast Guard Headquarters in Port Area, Manila.
Magdalo Rep. Gary Alejano and Anakpawis Rep. Ariel Casilao demanded that Tugade step down from his position as transportation secretary due to unresolved problems of the MRT-3.
Tugade has ordered the termination of the MRT-3 contract with Korean company Busan Universal Rail Inc (BURI)as its maintenance provider and said that the DOTr has taken over the maintenance work for the train system.
According to Tugade, a new maintenance provider is expected to come in 2018. REICELENE JOY N. IGNACIO
