Crowd favorite Valerie Weigmann was crowned Miss World Philippines 2014 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena on Sunday.
Weigmann, a Filipina-German, represented the province of Albay in the Bicol Region. The 24-year-old, a model and TV endorser, first appeared as a housemate in the ABS-CBN reality program Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition Plus in 2008. She has since appeared in several projects and landed a permanent hosting gig with the GMA Network noontime show Eat Bulaga this year.
Weigmann bagged a number of special and sponsored awards even before winning the main title. She was named Best in Swimsuit, Best in Fashion Runway and Best in Long Gown, and was also given awards by Hana Shampoo, Bench, Jessie Mendez Salon, Blue Water Spa, and Solaire Resorts and Casino, among others.
In total, the country’s newest beauty queen brought home 12 awards.
In the question and answer portion, Weigmann proved she had the brains to match her beauty. When asked why she deserves to win the crown, she answered: “I try to live my life in relation to others by putting myself in other people’s shoes. I believe in the importance of empathy and compassion because I see that if all of us can come together as one, we can all be advocates of change.”
She further talked about her advocacy for “our indigenous brothers and sisters [the Aetas]of Tarlac.”
“I believe that it is truly in giving that makes us beautiful,” she said.
Joining Weigmann in the Top 5 circle of winners were First Princess Lorraine Kendrickson, Second Princess Nelda Ibe, Third Princess Nicole Donesa, and Fourth Princess Rachel Louise Peters.
