Two children drown in Batangas boat accident

BATANGAS: Two children were killed while a 66-year-old man was missing in a boat accident on Taal Lake off San Nicolas town on Saturday evening.

Batangas provincial director Sr. Supt. Omega Jireh Fidel identified the fatalities as Joseph Medina, 2, and Krizza Marie Ramos, 4, from Barangay Alas-As in San Nicolas town.

Lorenzo de Villar Jr., also from Barangay Alas-As, remains missing.

San Nicolas police chief Sr. Insp. Ernesto Chavez said the victims, together with seven others, were on their way home after attending a graduation ceremony in Balete town when the incident happened around 7:40 p.m.

Chavez said the boat tilted when one of the children tried to reach a baloon floating in the lake.

“It looked like an overload because the size of the boat can only accommodate four to five people,” said Chavez.

As of Sunday morning, elements of the San Nicolas PNP, Municipal Disaster & Risk Reduction Management Council and the Coastguard were still scouring the area to locate de Villar.

Rescue teams rushed the two children to the Batangas Provincial Hospital but they were declared dead on arrival.
