Two killed as violence mars opening of village polls in Negros Occidental


AT least two people were reportedly killed while one was injured in a shooting incident that marred the opening of Monday’s village elections in a remote village in Toboso town, Negros Occidental province, police officials said.

Initial reports at the Philippien National Police (PNP) national operations center in Camp Crame said that the shooting incident occurred at about 7 a.m. at Purok Kinalumsan, Barangay Poblacion, Toboso, Negros Occidental.

Western Visayas Police Director, Chief Supt. Agrimero Cruz Jr., identified the fatalities as Lione Belleza and a certain Rey Erasan, while the wounded was identified as Brian Bacordo.

The police official said that a witness identified the suspects in the shooting incident as Gary Enriquez, a candidate for village chairman, a certain Regie Palarca and an alias Toto Kaskas, an alias Toto Maton and an alias Tata Walter.

Cruz said that elements of the Toboso Municipal Police station are currently investigating the said incident and conducting manhunt operations against the suspects. ANTHONY VARGAS
