Ateneo de Manila University foiled an Adamson University comeback to score a 79-66 win and its fourth straight victory in UAAP men’s basketball Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.
After the Blue Eagles stretched a 33-26 halftime spread to 57-32 at the end of third period, the Falcons unleashed a 16-2 run at the start of the payoff period capped by John Rodney Brondial and Ingrid Sewa’s three-point play each in the last four minutes.
But forward Ryan Buenafe fired a triple in the last two-minute mark and Kiefer Ravena split his free throws to extend Ateneo’s advantage to 75-61.
“We kept our composure in the game despite Adamson’s fourth quarter rally,” said Blue Eagles head coach Bo Perasol. “I’m really happy the players were able to hang on in the last three minutes. It’s a collective effort from the players.”
The struggling Falcons, who suffered their fifth consecutive loss, played loose defense at crunch time allowing Ravena and Buenafe to fend off Adamson’s fourth-quarter rally.
Ravena also scattered 18 points as the Blue Eagles improved their record to 5-4.
Sewa led Adamson with 17 points and six boards while Jericho Cruz and Jansen Rios added 14 each.
