Two-peat champions De La Salle University (DLSU) Lady Archers will face the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigresses in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) women’s table tennis finals on Wednesday at the Blue Eagle Gym in Quezon City.
The Lady Archers survived the Tigresses, 3-2, on their first meeting last October 9, but swept the España-based squad, 3-0, during the opening of the second round of eliminations last October 15.
After keeping their record unblemished at 14-0, the green-and-white squad automatically claimed a finals berth, while the UST Tigresses dropped their battle-for-second match against the Far Eastern University (FEU) Lady Tamaraws, 3-2, and settled for third place.
The UST Tigresses edged past the University of the Philippines (UP) Lady Maroons, 3-2. They also erased the twice-to-beat advantage of the Lady Tamaraws, 3-1, and eliminated the green-and-gold team from title contention, 3-2.
In the men’s finals, last season’s runner up and current top seed UST Tiger Paddlers will set a rematch against defending champions La Salle Green Paddlers.
During the elimination round, the UST paddlers carved out 3-0 and 3-1 victories over the La Salle paddlers last October 9 and 15, respectively.
The black-and-yellow squad also swept the eliminations at 14-0, while the Green Paddlers crawled their way up to the finals coming from sixth spot after eliminating the FEU Tamaraws, 3-1, the UP Fighting Maroons, 3-2, the University of the East (UE) Red Warriors, 3-0.
The La Salle Green Paddlers also defeated second seed National University (NU) Bulldogs twice with identical 3-2 victories.
Game 1 of the table tennis finals begins 9 a.m. on Wednesday.
