UAAP VOLLEYBALL: Ateneo women smash UP, tighten grip on 3rd place

Ateneo de Manila University outplayed University of the Philippines, 25-15, 25-14, -24, for its sixth win in UAAP women’s volleyball on Wednesday at The Arena in San Juan City.

Ateneo strengthened its hold on the No. 3 spot with a 6-3 record behind defending champion and unbeaten De La Salle University and National University.

Skipper Alyssa Valdez led the Lady Eagles with 19 points, highlighted by 14 attacks and a couple of blocks. Amy Ahomiro backed her up with 14 points along with Ella De Jesus (eight points) and Marge Tejada (seven).

“It’s normal for a team to relax a little bit when they’re two sets ahead but luckily we were able to recover in the latter part of the third set and get this win,” said Valdez.

UP absorbed its eighth loss in nine games as Angeli Araneta and Nicole Tiamzon could only produce eight and five points for the Lady Maroons.

In the men’s division, Karl Ian Dela Calzada nailed 23 points to power Far Eastern University (FEU) past University of Santo Tomas (UST), 25-16, 13-25, 25-20, 17-25, 15-13. Alexis Faytaren and Gregorio Dolor added a combined 24-point effort for the Tamaraws.

Ateneo also needed five sets to beat De La Salle University, 25-21, 26-28, 12-25, 25-19, 15-9, with Marck Jesus Espejo leading the scoring cudgels with 24 points. Neil Patrick Flores and Wilson Marasigan chipped in 12 points each. EMIL C. NOGUERA
